Theme 4: Ecological Restoration of Ecosystems and Cultural Heritage

Theme leader: Armin Bischoff (UAPV)

The main objectives of the theme are to develop new concepts for ecological restoration through an interdisciplinary approach (ecology and chemistry) - a goal with high significance for Mediterranean cultural ecosystems.

With respect to ecology, we provide new basic knowledge for the analysis of species co-existence processes in biological systems. We also test the impact of manipulating some so-called “ecosystem engineers” on ecosystem services.
In chemistry, we work on the analytics, identification and use of natural substances in the fine arts and in archeology. Our research addresses biomarkers and markers of natural or anthropogenic degradation of different materials (resins, colors).
