How can one identify Mediterranean Romulea species when they look very similar?<\/strong> This is the question they have been looking into Alex Baumel<\/a> and his colleagues, in a study on the Romul\u00e9es (Romulea<\/em>) in the Tyrrhenian region.<\/p>

Closely related to crocuses and belonging to the Iridaceae family, Mediterranean Romuleas are still little studied from a genetic perspective<\/strong>. The initial aim of the study was to assess their diversity more effectively, to test the current classification of the species and to trace their evolutionary history.<\/p>

To this end, the researchers analysed 353 nuclear genes<\/strong> thanks to high-throughput sequencing, which produced a considerable amount of genetic data on several hundred Romuleas. But the results held a surprise: Conventional phylogenetic methods have proved largely unsuitable for these data<\/strong>.<\/p>

Rather than giving up, the researchers developed a an original approach to species delineation<\/strong>, which enabled them to rigorously assess the diversity of 18 taxa from the Tyrrhenian region<\/strong>.<\/p>

This study therefore represents a first major step forward in the genetic investigation of Mediterranean Romuleae and opens up new avenues for a better understanding of their diversification and their evolutionary history<\/strong>.<\/p>
