Summary of the conference <\/strong><\/p>\n

Born in the oceans perhaps 2.4 billion years ago, fungi accompanied the first plants as they colonised the terrestrial environment. Today, the fungi of our forests can be parasites, symbiotic partners or recyclers. Recyclers have the extraordinary ability to break down very stubborn components, such as wood, to extract the sugars on which they feed. Current research is attempting to draw inspiration from fungi to produce renewable carbon-based molecules as an alternative to fossil carbon, without impacting on land use for food production or the preservation of natural areas.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
