Ecological Restoration of Ecosystems and Cultural Heritage

Team leaders : G. Culioli et A. Bischoff

Team presentation :

The IRPNC team, Engineering of the Restoration of Natural and Cultural Heritage, is built on a multidisciplinary approach (ecology - chemistry - legal sciences) to study the effects of the restoration of natural and cultural heritage under the lighting of different academic research disciplines (community ecology, population dynamics, biotic interactions, organic and analytical chemistry, environmental law, etc.).

It aims to develop theoretical bases of restoration and new concepts with the objective to testing them in an operational way. The selected models have “cultural ecosystems” associating natural and cultural heritage mainly in the Mediterranean region in order to identify key processes independently of the intrinsic characteristics of each model.

Ecosystems :

Cultural Heritage :

The other main axis of the team is the study of artistic and archaeological materials. Since several years those studies have contributed to the chemical and analytical knowledge of natural plant products by microchemical, chromatographic (HPLC with UV-vis/fluorimetry detector, GC-MS(/MS) ) and spectroscopic (FTIR, fluorimetry, UV-vis spectrometry, colorimetry) techniques.

For this purpose we develop analytical methods that enable the identification of chemical markers, characteristic of the natural materials used in cultural heritage (resins, dyes, pigments, binding media, etc.). This approach includes the comprehension of the mechanisms of thermal and photochemical degradation suffered by the identified markers.

Such studies concern the sectors of artwork restoration and cultural heritage conservation. The metabolomic approach of ancient and fresh plant compounds involves collaborations with botanists and specialists in natural substances. Our cooperation with different national and international groups of scientists (European projects mostly) put us in the center of the thematic and keep us aware of the new advances in this field.

In chemistry, we work on the analytics, identification and use of natural substances in the fine arts and in archeology. Our research addresses biomarkers and markers of natural or anthropogenic degradation of different materials (resins, colors)

Research interests

During the coming five years the research team will strengthen multidisciplinary work in particular by integrating an assis-tant professor in environmental law starting in September 2016. The integrative character of restoration practice often requires concepts beyond exact sciences (biology, chemistry), in particular in large scale ecological restoration. Such a practical ecological restoration approach is part of compensation measures accompanying construction or exploitation activities and will become more important with the implementation of the French Biodiversity Law. An involvement of human sciences (sociology, economy, law) in restoration projects is needed for such a holistic approach. A second integra-tion level will be simultaneously developed at different organisation levels of organisms involved in ecological restoration allowing an analysis of target plant communities (diversity and species composition) and populations. These organisation levels are plant community ecology (Thierry Dutoit, Elise Buisson, François Mesléard) and population biology including intra-specific diversity (recruitment of Armin Bischoff in 2013 and integration of Aline Le Menn in 2015). A third integra-tion level will combine plant and animal (in particular insect) ecology to analyse plant-animal interactions and to identify key animal species for plant community restoration such as ants (Armin Bischoff, recruitment of Olivier Blight in 2015). This level also includes approaches to restore and increase functional biodiversity using candidate plant traits to attract natural enemies of crop herbivores and to analyse related ecosystem services of plant diversity. Within the IMBE research unit these project are particularly developed with research groups working on paleo-environment and macroecology, on origin and evolution of biodiversity and on ecological vulnerability and nature conservation. These internal IMBE collabo-rations will be complemented by local collaborations with the INRA Avignon, in particular with the research units PSH, EMMAH and ECODEV according to the research objectives. International collaborations will be strengthened with Brazili-an, Norwegian, German and Belgian partners. Corresponding proposals have been submitted (e.g. ANR PRCI for bilateral collaborations with German teams).
The chemists of the group (Carole Mathe, Cathy Vieillescazes, Matthieu Ménager) will widen their expertise by strength-ening research on natural dyes in collaboration with the ARCHEOMED network. The possibility of using x-ray fluorescence to analyse historical materiel (varnish colours, ferro-gallic ink) will be evaluated allowing the publication of a reference manual. The chemists are also contributing to the Labex project ARCHIMEDE that has just been accepted: “Dying for resur-rection. Representation of death during the evolution of mummification”. This multidisciplinary study of the human mum-my collection in the Museum of Confluence (Lyon) is appropriate to examine the history of mummification by analysing the human bodies in terms of age and geographical origin which are unknown for most of them.
Two European projects will be submitted:
• Alcohol in Ancient Societies: Archaeological and Anthropological approaches (programme ERC: European Research Council, September 2016).
• SCHITECH (European JoinDoctorate in Science and Technology for Cultural Heritage), programme Marie Curie Inno-vative Training Networks (ITN-EJD, January 2017).
