Research Themes

Regardless the typical tryptic of siding- impact smoothing - degradation counteracting based on restoration strategies aiming at repairing ecosystems and their functionality, it would be important to develop new strategies for management and preservation of species and natural areas which integrate human society .
An interdisciplinary approach will ensure a better understanding of the dynamics of relationships between Human and his environment (historical ecology, landscape ecology, social and economic sciences, law sciences) and will have to be en-hanced. Interactions between decision makers, socio-economic partners (NGO, managers of natural areas, forest managers, farmers …) and more globally the civil society have to be reinforced.
To do so, it will be necessary to go on developing knowledge in ecology of populations, of communities, ecology of trophic interactions, from a group of individuals to landscape (interaction and association) by taking advantages of Poles ‘Exper-tise and Knowledge Transfer’ and ‘Biodiversity of overseas islands’ and by studying more extensively socio-ecological systems.
More specifically, this new team will aim at addressing the following questions:
• How can we better link actions of management and conservation with the analyses of the dynamics of populations and communities?
• How can results from studies on the structure and functions of landscape be applied to ensure the stability or the restoration of ecological continuity?
• What is the degree of ecosystem vulnerability and more specifically, the vulnerability of their functions -sustaining ecosystem services- to past, present and future global changes?
• Can the net of protected areas and the regulation on environment protection ensure the resilience of socio-ecological systems?
These several questions will be sustained by researches in the field via the net of diversified Workshop Areas (temporary ponds, high-elevation lakes, rivers, shrublands, coastal environments, forests, agrosystems, islands, peri-urban areas). These comparative approaches based on observations, will be complemented by research under controlled conditions using in situ and ex situ experiments aiming at analyzing more precisely the ecological process involved and to ensure a transversal knowledge from the results obtained.
