I specialise in the genetics of comparative development or Evo-Devo, a discipline that aims to understand the link between the evolution of the mechanisms underlying the development of organisms and the evolution of organisational plans. Since I joined the IMBE in 2012, the environmental component has become increasingly important and my work in evo-devo is moving towards an eco-evo-devo approach..

Sponges, because of their phylogenetic position at the base of the metazoan tree, occupy a key position for understanding the origin of a large number of morpho-anatomical attributes present in eumetazoans (e.g. the nervous system, muscle cells, epithelia, polar axes, etc.) as well as the fundamental processes of development. In recent years, my work has focused on gaining a better understanding of the origin and evolution of epithelia.
