Catherine Fernandez is a professor at Aix Marseille University's Mediterranean Institute of Biodiversity and Ecology. After being recruited as a lecturer at the University of Corsica, she joined Aix Marseille in 2001. She was head of the DFME team from 2008 to 2018 before becoming deputy director in 2018 and then director of the IMBE from 2019 to 2023. On 1 July 2024, she was appointed Deputy Scientific Director of the IRD's ECOBIO department. She studies the role of specialised metabolites in the functioning of ecosystems via environmental metabolomics, allelopathic processes and ecogeochemistry in Mediterranean and tropical environments. Her research focuses on terrestrial forest environments, as well as interface environments such as mangroves and coastal lagoons. She has been involved in the International Allelopathy Society since 2008, becoming its president in July 2024.
