A specialist in sponges from the start of his scientific career, with a general interest in the entire phylum. His main areas of expertise in taxonomy are the Mediterranean, Indo-Pacific and Caribbean. The main points of interest are phylogeny and classification, reproduction, cytology, symbiosis with micro-organisms, research into biactive molecules and the fauna of underwater caves. Of particular interest were hypercalcified sponges, relics of a remarkable fauna of Mesozoic and Palaeozoic reef builders, and carnivorous sponges, whose discovery in a coastal cave demonstrated their wide distribution in bathyal and abyssal zones.
