Review of the 8ISEBE - Recife, Brazil

Announced several months ago on the IMBE websitethe 8ᵉ edition of the International Symposium on Biotechnology and Environmental Engineering (8ISEBE). was held from 20 to 24 October 2025 in Recife (Brazil). Supported by IMBE, the organiser of the previous edition in Marseille, the event confirmed the international influence in this series of symposia.

Organised by Environmental Sanitation Laboratory (LSA) at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) under the aegis of the association ABIAER, the symposium, entitled «Harnessing Microbial Potential to Address Critical Environmental Challenges», brought together 218 researchers, teachers and students from 17 countries, on the major challenges facing the environmental biotechnology.

Five members of IMBE (teams EECAR, POPCO and HEALTH) made an active contribution to this year's edition, particularly within the scientific committee. The programme a combined lectures, 6 plenary sessions, 90 oral presentations, 113 scientific posters as well as 2 technical visits major industrial sites in the Recife region. These highlights provided concrete illustrations of the applications of environmental biotechnologies and offered a broad vision of the scientific advances and their operational spin-offs.

The symposium concluded with a tribute to Professor Hector Poggi-Varaldo, founder of the ISEBE series and a long-standing partner of IMBE.
From special issues magazines Renewable Energy (Elsevier) and Environmental Science and Pollution Research (Springer) will help to promote the work presented.
