CARDIMED: IMBE at the heart of nature-based solutions for climate resilience

The European project CARDIMED (Climate Resilience in the Mediterranean), funded by Horizon Europe, aims to strengthen the climate resilience in the Mediterranean by bringing together regional and international initiatives around nature-based solutions.

The central role of IMBE
L'IMBE is coordinating the scientific monitoring and implementation of solutions at two’Aix-Marseille University : campuses Saint-Charles and Saint-Jérôme. Our teams, along with researchers and students, are helping to :
✅ Monitor and measure the impact of developments on the biodiversity, air, water and soil quality
✅ Assess the reducing heat islands and improving user well-being
✅ Testing and optimising nature-based solutions, such as waterproofing of surfaces, the urban micro-forests and infiltration channels

Concrete action on the ground

  • Over 65 trees and shrubs planted on the Saint-Jérôme site

  • Revegetation and permeable coverings

  • Improving PRM access and the living environment

  • Widening pedestrian crossings

IMBE on the international stage: Zaragoza 2025
IMBE's contributions to the project CARDIMED were honoured at the Annual Report Meeting à Zaragoza, Spain (24-26 September 2025).
The actions carried out on the demonstrators at the Saint-Jérôme and Saint-Charles campuses were presented by V. Masotti, with the participation of L. Czuckerman and AM Farnet, highlighting the IMBE's key role in the co-creation and scientific monitoring of nature-based solutions.

The effects of the project are already visible on Saint-Jérôme and will be visible on Saint-Charles very soon.
