As part of the Endoume Wednesdays series of lectures for the general public, Thierry Dutoit, Ecologist and CNRS Research Director at the IMBE, and Emma Leone, doctoral student in ecology at the IMBE, will be giving a talk entitled "Mauvais souvenirs militaires dans les espaces naturels. How to clean up and renaturalise? "in person at the Endoume Marine Station or online. direct.

Summary of the conference:

The contamination of ecosystems by persistent substances from military munitions is a very worrying phenomenon, particularly following the expansion of conflict zones around the world, but also in areas where there have been conflicts in the past or where there are sites for military training, the manufacture or destruction of munitions. This is particularly true of the Crau plain in the Bouches-du-Rhône département, a remarkable natural area that is now protected but has been heavily impacted by military activities since the end of the 19th century. Could nature-based solutions help to clean up and renaturalise this ecosystem while limiting the impact on its exceptional flora and fauna?
