Recognising the holders of traditional knowledge in scientific publications

L'ethnopharmacology and theethnobiology study traditional knowledge about plants, animals and minerals, but this knowledge is still sometimes published without appropriate attribution to the communities that have shared them.

In this publication, Irène Teixidor-Toneu and colleagues have developed practical guidelines to ensure proper recognition of communities and individual knowledge holders, based on discussions at the international congress of ethnobiology in Marrakech in 2024.

A transparent and consistent reporting of the origin of this knowledge is essential in order to comply with international agreements such as the Nagoya Protocol and strengthen the ethics and rigour of scientific publications.
